✦ LOCAL EXPERTISE

Why Book With Us Instead of a Street Taxi or App

The Umm Al-Joud area has few taxis waiting around once your visit ends. Uber and Careem pickups from this specific zone are unreliable, and street drivers often don’t know the exact location or push you into a rushed return.

  • Fixed price, confirmed in writing over WhatsApp before you leave your hotel
  • No advance payment — pay your driver at drop-off
  • One named driver assigned to your booking
  • No shared passengers — private vehicle, direct route
✦ ABOUT THE FACTORY

What Is the Kiswa Factory?

The Kiswa Factory’s official name is the King Abdulaziz Complex for the Holy Kaaba Kiswa — most people simply call it the Kiswa Factory, the kiswa kaaba factory, or Ghilaf-e-Kaaba factory. This is the only facility in the world where the black silk covering of the Kaaba is made.

Before 1927, the Kiswa was made in Egypt and transported to Makkah, sometimes arriving damaged after the long journey. King Abdulaziz moved production inside Saudi Arabia in 1927, and the current facility opened in 1977. Today, over 200 skilled artisans work year-round, using roughly 670kg of raw silk imported from Italy, 120kg of gold thread, and 100kg of silver thread. The entire process takes 8 to 10 months and costs approximately SAR 25 million annually.

✦ LOCATION & DISTANCE

Where Is the Kiswa Factory Located?

Address: 8308 Old Makkah Jeddah Rd, Al Hamra Umm Al Jud, Makkah 24321.

Distance from Masjid al-Haram: approximately 10km, a 20–25 minute drive under normal traffic (30–40 minutes during peak hours). Many pilgrims search for the kiswa factory makkah address specifically because there is no direct bus route or walking path — a taxi or private car is the only practical way to get there.

⚠ REQUIRED BEFORE YOU VISIT

How to Get a Kiswa Factory Appointment (The Real Process)

Unlike most tourist sites, you cannot simply show up. A kiswa factory visit appointment is required before you go. Entry requires an official government permit, applied for through Saudi Arabia’s digital portals. Here is the actual process: go to the General Presidency of Haramain’s official website or app, log in using Nafath (National Access) with your Iqama or Border Number, navigate to Grand Mosque Services then “Visit King Abdulaziz Complex for Kiswa of the Kaaba” and select “Add Visit Permit,” then fill in your preferred date, time, and the names and nationalities of anyone joining you. Submit and wait for SMS confirmation — first an acknowledgment, then final approval.

  • The usual 4-to-4.5-hour drive can take 6 to 8 hours, sometimes longer
  • Vehicles are booked out 4 to 8 weeks in advance
  • Standard online pricing does not apply — seasonal rates are confirmed directly

For travel during these periods, WhatsApp or call us directly for an honest answer on timing, price and availability.

Who can apply: Iqama holders, Umrah visa holders, and general visitors with an active Absher account, registered mobile number, and Nafath access. You can bring up to 10 companions, and a maximum of 4 reservations are allowed per applicant per week.

A real friction point worth knowing: if you’re on an Umrah visa without local Saudi residency, registering for Absher and Nafath from abroad can be genuinely difficult. This is exactly where we can help — message us your travel dates and we’ll walk you through the permit steps or help coordinate it alongside your taxi booking. Book your permit at least 3–5 days ahead, and 1–2 weeks ahead during Ramadan.

✦ PLAN YOUR VISIT

Visiting Hours, What You’ll See, and What to Honestly Expect

Monday to Thursday, 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Closed Friday through Sunday, and sometimes during Hajj-season preparations. Arrive 10–15 minutes before your permitted slot. Tuesday or Wednesday mornings around 9 AM tend to be less crowded than Monday.

  • The Dyeing Hall, Jacquard Weaving Machines (nearly 10,000 threads per metre), Printing Department, Hand Embroidery Section, Assembly Hall, and a Museum with historic Kiswa pieces.
  • Entry is completely free — there is no ticket to buy. Your appointment confirmation is your permission to enter, not a separate purchase.
  • Several real visitors report being shown a short video and the museum only, without access to the live production floor — access depends on the day’s production schedule and security conditions, not on how much you paid.
  • We’d rather tell you this upfront than let you be surprised. The visit is still genuinely worthwhile for the history and museum pieces, just don’t expect a guaranteed factory-floor tour every time.
✦ ENTRY FEE

Is There an Entry Fee?

No. Entry to the Kiswa Factory is completely free — there’s no ticket to buy. You only pay for your transport and, if you book one, a tour operator’s service fee. Your appointment confirmation itself is your permission to enter; no separate permit or ticket purchase is needed.

✦ HOW IT WORKS

Our Process

1

WhatsApp your date, group size, and whether you already have your permit.

2

If you need help with the appointment, we walk you through the Nafath/Absher steps.

3

We confirm your driver, vehicle, and fixed taxi price.

4

Driver picks you up from your Makkah hotel and takes you to Umm Al-Joud.

5

Driver waits (if round trip booked) and brings you straight back — no scrambling for a return ride.

Is entry to the Kiswa Factory free?

Yes, completely free. You only pay for transport and, if applicable, a tour service fee.

Can I visit on an Umrah visa?

Yes, but you’ll need an Absher account with Nafath access to apply for the permit, which can be difficult to set up without local residency. We can help guide you through this.

How far is the Kiswa Factory from Masjid al-Haram?

About 10km, roughly 20–25 minutes by taxi under normal traffic.

What are the visiting hours?

Monday to Thursday, 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Closed Friday to Sunday.

Do I need a ticket to enter?

No ticket is needed. Your government-issued appointment permit is your entry permission.

Will I see the actual factory floor, or just a museum?

It varies by day and production schedule. Some visitors see live weaving and embroidery; others are shown the museum and a video only. We tell you this honestly rather than promise something we can’t guarantee.

How do I book a Kiswa Factory appointment?

Through the official Nafath/Absher government portal, not something any private company can bypass. We can help you through the steps if you’re unfamiliar with the system.

Can I take photos inside?

Photography is generally allowed in certain areas, but this can vary — ask your guide on the day.

How long does a visit take?

Typically 1 to 2 hours.

Can I visit during Hajj season?

The factory sometimes closes for preparations during Hajj — confirm your dates with us before booking a permit slot.

Do I need a private guide?

Not required, but a guide can explain the process and history in more depth than the standard visit.

Is Kiswa Factory taxi service available same-day?

Yes, though booking a day ahead guarantees your preferred vehicle and time slot.

✦ REAL PILGRIM REVIEWS

What Pilgrims Say

★★★★★

“Our Kiswa Factory visit was smooth from start to finish. The driver arrived at our hotel exactly on time and was very polite and patient throughout. We had already sorted our permit through Nafath, but the driver still confirmed everything with us before we left, which was reassuring. He waited outside while we completed our visit and brought us straight back to our hotel without any hassle. The car was clean and comfortable, and the whole trip felt well organized. Really appreciated the honest and professional service.”

★★★★★

“We booked a taxi for our Kiswa Factory visit and the experience was excellent. The driver knew the Umm Al-Joud area well, which made a real difference since it’s not close to the Haram. He waited for nearly two hours while we went through the visit and museum, and was ready the moment we came out. No confusion, no delays, just a straightforward and comfortable ride both ways. Would definitely recommend this service to anyone planning to see where the Kiswa is made.”

Ahmad Abrar — Canada · 5 July 2026

★★★★★

“Kiswa Factory ka cab bohat acha experience tha. Driver time par hotel pohanch gaye aur permit ke bare mein bhi helpful information di, kyunke humein Nafath appointment ke process ka pata nahi tha. Waiting time ke sath round trip book kiya tha, jo bilkul sahi raha kyunke wahan se wapas taxi milna mushkil hota hai. Gaari saaf aur comfortable thi, aur poora safar sukoon se guzra. Achi aur reliable service ke liye shukriya.”
