Why Did the Prophet Muhammad PBUH Go to Taif?
In the tenth year of his prophethood, after the deaths of his wife Khadijah (RA) and his uncle Abu Talib removed two of his strongest protections in Makkah, the Prophet SAW walked roughly 70km to Taif hoping its leaders would listen to his message and offer support. Instead, he was rejected outright — the people of Taif mocked him and set the local children and slaves to throw stones at him as he left the city, injuring his feet until they bled.
Exhausted and in pain, he took shelter in an orchard belonging to two Makkan men who, despite opposing his message themselves, felt compassion and sent their Christian slave, Addas, out with a bunch of grapes. What happened between them at that moment, and what happened on the mountain pass on his way back to Makkah, became two of the most quietly powerful stories in the Seerah. This is what a Taif Ziyarat is really about: not sightseeing, but standing at the actual places where the Prophet Muhammad showed his most complete patience and mercy, even toward those who had just hurt him.
Abdullah ibn Abbas Mosque
The single most visited Ziyarat site in Taif, and for good reason. Abdullah ibn Abbas (RA) was the Prophet’s SAW cousin, raised close to him from a young age, fetching water for him, attending his gatherings, and absorbing his teaching directly. He went on to become known as Hibr al-Ummah (“the Scholar of the Nation”) and Tarjuman al-Qur’an (“the Interpreter of the Quran”), and his commentary remains foundational to how the Quran is understood today.
His tomb sits inside the mosque built in his name in central Taif, opposite the women’s prayer area and enclosed by a low white wall. The tomb of Imam Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib is located nearby as well. Pilgrims come here specifically to pray, reflect, and make dua for one of the most significant scholars in Islamic history.
Masjid Addas — The Story of the Grapes
This is the site most people mean when they picture “Taif Ziyarat” in their mind, even if they don’t know the name. After being stoned and driven from the city, the Prophet Muhammad collapsed under a tree in an orchard outside Taif, bleeding and exhausted. Two brothers who owned the orchard, non-Muslims who had personally opposed him, still felt moved by his condition and sent their servant, a Christian named Addas, out with a plate of grapes.
As the Prophet SAW began to eat, he said “Bismillah.” Addas, startled, asked who he was, no one in that region spoke that way. When the Prophet SAW told him, and asked where Addas was from, Addas answered Nineveh, and the Prophet Muhammad SAW spoke to him about the Prophet Yunus (AS), who had also come from that same city. Addas immediately recognized something true in what he was hearing, and became Muslim on the spot.
The mosque that stands today marks the area near that original orchard. It’s small and simple, and the surrounding land still grows grapes, a quiet, tangible link back to that exact moment.
Al Hada Mountain
On the difficult journey back to Makkah after his rejection in Taif, tradition holds that the winding mountain pass at Al Hada offered the Prophet PBUH natural cover and protection. Today it’s known for something almost the opposite of that hardship, cool mountain air, sweeping green valleys, and one of the most scenic drives in the region, with a cable car connecting the upper and lower roads.
Many pilgrims stop here specifically to pause, make dua, and take in the view before continuing. It works well as a natural midpoint between the emotional weight of Masjid Addas and the scholarly reflection of Abdullah ibn Abbas Mosque. Best visited just after Fajr or in the late afternoon, when the light and temperature are both at their best.

Taif Ziyarat Taxi from Jeddah and Madinah
